What Should I Do Immediately After Being Arrested in Lebanon, TN?

Being arrested can be frightening and confusing. You may not know how long you will be held, when you will appear in court, or what you should say to law enforcement. Taking a few practical steps may help protect your interests while you begin addressing the case.

First, remain calm and follow lawful instructions. Do not argue with officers or resist the arrest. You have the right to seek legal counsel, and you should consider requesting an attorney before answering detailed questions about the allegations.

An arrest is not the time to try to explain everything or persuade officers to release you. Statements made during an investigation may become part of the evidence. You should avoid guessing, speculating, or discussing details with people you do not know.

Keep every document you receive and pay close attention to bond conditions and court dates. Your paperwork may identify a required court appearance, restrictions on contact, testing requirements, travel limitations, or other release conditions.

Do not discuss the case with other people in custody or with strangers, and do not post about the arrest on social media. Once you are able, write down what you remember about the arrest, including the location, people present, statements made, and any physical or medical concerns.

Preserve information about witnesses, video, medical conditions, medications, or other facts that may be relevant. Do not alter, delete, or hide potential evidence. Keep copies of citations, arrest records, bond documents, and property receipts.

Contact a Tennessee criminal defense attorney as soon as reasonably possible. A lawyer may review the charge, arrest paperwork, bond, search, statements, testing, and other evidence. Early legal advice may also help you understand whether a preliminary hearing, arraignment, or other court proceeding is scheduled.

Bond and release conditions may be addressed shortly after an arrest. Tennessee law includes procedures concerning bail, release, and conditions imposed on a person awaiting further court proceedings. Do not ignore a court notice, no-contact order, testing requirement, or other release condition. Violating those conditions may create additional legal problems.

It is also important to remember that an arrest is not a conviction. The State must prove the charge, and an attorney may need to review the reason for the arrest and how the evidence was collected.
